Integrated project delivery (IPD) - Involves collaboration of all stake holders in a project such as Owners, Managers, Designers, Procurers, Contractors and Maintainers.

The aim of this alliance is to have formal non-confrontational relationships in the project group so that on the whole the system works on the principle of ‘Pain share and Gain share’. The process also helps to Increase value and reduce waste.

This system was conceived in the U S market where they realized that the project process was becoming very confrontational and litigations were becoming common. Increased wastage was also a worry.

Use of leading Technology such as BIM and other tools are actively advocated as these will help in reducing the rework and hence cut the wastage and save time.

Relevance to Indian Context:  Indian construction scene is also becoming complex with many players in a project and hence the atmosphere is becoming confrontational.

Measures to mitigate this situation shall also be discussed.

Closure:  If the audience feels that this needs to be taken forward, a small working group can be set up to study and adopt IPD for Indian context

There is a huge population of people with disabilities. According to WHO, 15% of the world population has one disability or the other. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 mandates that all existing buildings should be made accessible as per standards in five years time and that no new building will get NOC if they do not comply with standards. Accessibility not just affects people with mobility disabilities but other disabilities as well.

Rama Chari has more than two decades  of work experience in the field of disability.

Rama started her career as an Educator for children with disabilities in the rural community based project of Action for Ability Development & inclusion (AADI) (Formerly, Spastics Society of Northern India (SSNI). She prepared children with disabilities for integrating them into regular schools in the villages of Haryana. She then joined National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), a leading national level advocacy organization. In 2005, she joined Progeon (now Infosys BPO) and set up their equal opportunity programme.

In July 2007, she along with four other professionals set up DEOC (www.deoc.in). DEOC specialses in the areas of consulting, training, accessibility and research in the area of  inclusion of people with disabilities.  They developed an HR Manual, “Values Route to Business Success – The Why & How of Employing People with disabilities”, a comprehensive book on disability employment in India. This was published by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Their inclusion framework has  received national and international recognition.  They have undertaken several policy researches on employment, data collection, inclusion of people with leprosy, implementation of the CRPD, development of the new legislation and so on.

Specifically in the area of accessibility, DEOC has done extensive study on national and international standards. We reviewed the draft NBC and made several recommendations for ensuring that the standards are in line with ISO standards. DEOC is an empanelled access auditor under the Accessible India Campaign of Government of India. DEOC has done trainings for different stakeholders on accessibility. DEOC has been invited to  make presentations by Government, Industry bodies in the areas of accessibility, smart city mission, etc.
