Topic: Buffers Management in Projects (Critical Chain) by Mr. M.S. Hiremath

Independent Consultant

Synopsis:

Project consists of set tasks sequenced in an order required.

Project has dead line –finish date. Project duration is derived based individual task durations. Longest path / critical path is project duration.

Task durations are estimated based on historical information / analogous estimation / parametric – estimating methods.

The resource working on a task, when asked duration estimation of the task he is working on , usually he gives estimation with contingency added. (100% confidence ). This contingency is not visible. It is built in the task duration estimation. The standard practice is task duration to have duration at 50% confidence.

The contingency of each task is separated from each task duration estimation, and aggregated. This aggregated contingency is defined as project buffer, and it is added to the end of project to protect finish date of the project. Now the project is base lined.

When the execution of the project begins we track the project progress and use the project buffer. Some tasks take durations longer than the estimated ones, while others may take lesser duration compared to the estimated durations.

Thus we can know the health of the project, namely how much project work is remaining to be completed v/s the remaining project buffer . This process is reserve analysis. We can take corrective / corrective action to compress the remaining balance – schedule.

This is also called as critical chain project management methodology. Critical chain is resource constrained schedule , where in , in addition to technical dependency , resource dependency is also considered. It addresses the human behaviors in project management namely Law of Parkinson, Student’s syndrome and Multi tasking.

Presentation 2

Topic: Meetings Matter

by Mr. Nagesh Ramamurthy,
Project Management Professional

Synopsis:

We have instances, one person taking lead to communicate with several people results in quick and satisfactory outcome rather than same people huddling together for a discussion in a meeting. Also, in organizations crucial decisions are made by one person – usually a project manager / senior management representative – decisions are conveyed over an email, over a telephonic call, or a simple conversation between 2 people.

Definitely, most meetings are not taken seriously, where people gather just to meet one another, attend to poke fun at others, many attendees discuss everything trivial and out of agenda. For some it is waste of time and for other few it is an opportunity to multi-task and attends to personal left-over activities. Yes, we all know how meetings are painful, are waste of valuable time and many call it a ‘necessary evil’. We love to hate meetings, isn’t it? Leaders should consider meetings as use of a valuable resource, cost.

What will the audience gain:

From his experiences, observations and research, the speaker wishes to provide reasons why time for meetings is to be invested. Speaker intends to provide instances and cases on how meetings have provided opportunities to see leadership in action, assists in connect to gather positive outcomes, provide platform for people & knowledge management, and, why meetings should be a necessary routine (read ritual) in a project.
