Q : This unifies the different HR processes that exist in silos in organizations

A : Historically, HR processes have resided in silos. For example, recruitment has been separate from performance management; succession planning has been distinct from career planning; and training and development has remained separate from onboarding. The notion is changing today as we rapidly move to a SAAS environment even for HR processes. Here comes Unified Talent Management (UTM), a term that has been doing the rounds for quite some time, but brought into prominence in a survey conducted in the US by Taleo Research (part of Oracle) and a whitepaper published by Oracle in 2012. In the survey, 51 percent of respondents indicated that talent management is essential for business success, whereas 86 percent of respondents found it challenging to clearly link talent management goals to business goals. Majority of respondents saw the value that UTM systems and processes deliver. According to Ellucian.com, UTM is defined by an organically grown talent management suite that touches all aspects of the employee lifecycle. By aggregating all facets of talent management, UTM delivers both the big picture view of an institution's entire workforce and the on-going story of each individual employee. Although there are many components of a full UTM suite, recruiting and performance management processes are considered to be the key applications and primary deployment.
