EditorEditor's Note

Dear Friends,

I am happy to share that the PMI Bangalore India Chapter will be organizing the 2nd edition of Project Management Industry Symposium for the Engineering and Construction (E&C) Industry on Friday, the 10th March at The Leela Palace, Bengaluru. This year's Symposium theme is "Building A Better Tomorrow - Leveraging Project Management". pme mar 2017 15If there is one industry that encompasses all the challenges in Project Management that can certainly be the E&C Industry. The challenges span from capturing the ever changing customer expectation, managing the work contracts, especially the contracted work force (the construction workers who often would say they are just building the 'wall' and not the metaphorical 'cathedral'), and the gripping focus to keep the cost and time under control- the E&C Industry poses all of these challenges to the Project Managers (PM). To deliver their projects, the PM needs to manage a bunch of statutory and regulatory guidelines (air traffic clearance, pollution, fire, municipal or corporation clearance etc.) coupled with socio-political pressures,  each adding a layer of complexity and  delays.

There is a high potential for encountering unforeseen conditions and it is often difficult to apply automation to E&C industry. The nature of the work often requires retrofit, rehabilitation, and restoration (RRR) along with new work. Safety remains an ongoing concern for the E&C Project Manager. Construction by nature is inherently dangerous, with a high degree of hazard and risk. The impact from construction accidents, gets highlighted very quickly and has a high impact both in terms of costs ($) and human suffering As projects became more complex, there is a greater need for Project Managers with formal training to learn from the best practices from other industries (including E&C).

The Chapter also conducts an E&C Footprints session, which is conducted on the 3rd Saturday of every month at The Royal Orchid, Bangalore from 8.30-10.30 am. You may refer to the Chapter website or get in touch with chapter representatives for more details. These initiatives by the Bangalore Chapter can be leveraged by Project Managers like us to continuously upgrade our Project Management skills to make an indelible impact from our projects..

Happy Reading.

Thanks and Best Wishes,
