The 4th Industrial Revolution

Micheal Isaac, Sr Project Manager - Volvo in his session on The 4th Industrial Revolution, shared a case study on Digital Transformation in the Manufacturing Industry. This pertained to the shop-floor Assembly line in an automobile manufacturing plant.

It has cyber-physical systems with machines communicating with machines as well as the human operators. There are sensors that detect when work in assembly line on one work-center is completed and moved automatically to the next machine. This information gets automatically updated in the system and the control room dashboard shows a real-time view of the progress in the assembly line. This paves the way for decentralized decision making and elimination of human errors.

This platform for smart manufacturing enables quick response to shop floor changes in the design. This helps to minimize disruptions during deployment. What used to take 4 weeks to rejig the assembly line for a design change, now takes only 7 hours. This results in huge business value due to Interoperability, Modularity and quick response to design changes for different variants of the product on the assembly line.

Managing Innovation as Projects

'Managing Innovation as projects' was an interesting session delivered by Raj Agrawal from GE Healthcare. Based on his experiences of delivering innovative medical devices and other products he shared the structured methods followed by his organization to come up with innovative products. The philosophy is to deliver Innovative products that have practical applications, and which leads to business success. This resulted in the team coming up with many innovative products and several patents as well.

The speaker outlined the 3 step process namely : ‘Identify - Invent - Implement' with many sub processes and activities in each of the 3 steps. A huge amount of Primary, secondary and tertiary data was compiled by the team with an 'Immersion phase' in a clinical area .

He shared a case study of the team coming up with an unique product useful to intubated patients in the ICU of a Hospital. The ailment is called VAP (Ventilator associated Pneumonia) where the secretion of saliva/fluids gets into the lungs of ICU patients leading to prolonged treatment. The innovative product has received a patent and is in production. The session covered the structured process to designing the product.

 

Staying Relevant in Changing Times

‘Staying Relevant in Changing Times' was the topic of the Keynote address during the E & C Symposium of the PMPC 2018 Conference. While rapid changes heralded by fast changing technology, demographic changes, ecosystem changes (political and aspirational), it has become imperative to seek one constant - that of staying relevant and what this means in terms of thought and action for the individual professional, at various stages of one's career and growth.

Delivered by Mike Holland, CEO Embassy Office Parks, it was a stimulating session and most appropriate for the current Real Estate Scenario in India. What brought authenticity to the takeaway's was the 'talk the walk' nature of his speech, with numerous examples and stories from his experiences. Mike had come to India 2 decades back and discovered inspiring reasons to stay back since then.

His advice to professionals for staying relevant were:-

1)  Having Curiosity : This trait prompts one to learn new things, ask questions and to network. It could be any subject or activity, staying curious would expand one's knowledge and opportunities as well.

2) Being a Learner : While experience is the best teacher, the responsibility to learn is with one self. We need to take charge of our learning goals.

3) Embracing Challenges : While seeing the opportunities in them. In the real estate area, the rise of co-working spaces in office realty, poses a threat to the business of commercial office market. However factoring this change as part of the menu basket of business offerings, would indeed be converting this to an opportunity!

4) Be Open to new ideas from the millennial work force. In fact, hire inexperienced young people. The baggage of unlearning would not be there and the curiosity level would be higher; leading to an adaptable and self-motivated engagement of staff.

5) Try new things on a regular basis.

Some of the quotes he left the audience with were thought provoking, such as :

  • What are you learning or studying this week or this month?
  • Surround yourself with people who are Purifiers (not Polluters!)
  • If I am still doing what I was doing 10 years ago - I should be fired!
