It was really interesting to know his impressions about Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, E. Sreedharan, Advisor to Indian Metro projects, Mr. Mani Ratnam, renowned Film Producer & Director, Monisha Kaltenborn, First Woman Team Principal in Formula One racing. All of them had accrued the nuances of Project Management in their assignments.

It was apparent that there is a slow but steady change that is engulfing the Indian IT Service Industry. He indicated that this is 108 Billion USD industry which was the darling of the bourses. There is a huge impact created by Automation, where the first 100 Billion required 3 Million Professionals and the next 100 Billion will need less than 1.8 Million Professionals. He stressed that the lack of Innovation, poor skill depth and below par Soft Skills are the main challenges to move up the value chain. The labor arbitrage and pyramid staffing are not enough to sustain the value chain anymore.

The impact has touched the role of Project Manager’s as well. This means a Project Manager is expected to know the big picture and a radical change from tactical to customer facing Leadership and Strategic partnership. It was interesting to know the paradigm shift on the critical competencies for the Project Managers’ role. The key considerations include a business acumen to drive business outcomes. One of the traits that is essential to imbibe is customer advocacy and collaboration.

Trust evolves when we reach out to our Customer and keep them informed in a consistent and candid manner. Managing Risks in a proactive way will go a long way to assuage the uncertainties faced by our Customers. Project Managers must be able to simplify the big picture and inspire the team members to align and work towards a common objective.
