Q : This graph shows how human brain’s ability to retain memory decreases over time
A : The Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve mentions that humans start losing the memory of learned knowledge over time, in a matter of days or weeks, unless the learned knowledge is consciously reviewed time and again. Herman Ebbinghaus conceptualized and conducted a series of tests on himself in 1885 by memorizing different nonsense words such as “WID”, “ZOF and “KAF”, and the results plotted in a graph came to be known as the forgetting curve.
Ebbinghaus found that the forgetting curve is exponential and memory retention drops from 100% at the time of learning any particular piece of information to 40% within the first dew days. The forgetting curve is exponential because memory loss is rapid and huge within the first few days of learning. After that, the rate of memory loss decreases and the rate of forgetting becomes slower.
