PMI Bangalore India Chapter – Exciting Journey of 20 years
ontributed by Raju Dhole, PMP
In 1997, three individuals, Sheel Thakur, Amar Bhaskar and Purnajit Chatterjee deliberated on the benefits of associating with PMI and opening a Chapter in Bangalore. As a pre-requisite, they got themselves PMPcertified and started the journey of the chapter formation. They interacted with many prominent personalities from the industry and requested them to offer their services as Directors on the Board of the newly proposed chapter.
In 1999, the chapter was registered. The chapter leaders started marketing the benefits of associating with PMI through memberships and certifications of PMP to prospective individuals and organizations to solicit memberships and support. The chapter hired one staff to manage the day to day affairs of the chapter.
In 2003, the first PMP Quest training program with a competitive fee structure per candidate was announced by the chapter. Initially this was run once in a quarter on four consecutive days.
There was low response and different venues tried out. Later, this was strategically positioned to run over two weekends, to help project managers aspiring to become PMPs to be able to attend the training program without taking leave from their work. A throwback picture of 2008 PMP quest program.
In 2007, the monthly newsletter, PM Essence, was launched. The newsletter has been a flagship publication for PMI Bangalore chapter every month.
In 2011, the Chapter received an award for NGO outreach.
In 2015, the chapter hosted the National Conference of PMI India for the 2nd time. As usual, the registration crossed the 1000 mark, which is a testimony of the standards that the chapter maintains while delivering service to its members. It also launched PM Enlight, the 1-1 mentoring program during National Conference.
In 2019, Chapter launched domain-based PM fundamentals for Civil Engineering student under the banner PM Empower.

The PM Essence team had an opportunity to interact with Tejas Sura, the chief guest of the 20th Anniversary of the Bangalore Chapter celebrations. We also captured sound bites from Mr. Girish Kadam, the region mentor for the chapter. Both these gentlemen are PMI members for more than 2 decades!
Having been closely working with various chapters and at the executive level, the Essence team got to ask them questions like – What are some of the changes that you have seen over 20 years in Project Management? What’s the next disruption that project managers can anticipate in project management? How does the Bangalore Chapter compare with other chapters in the world? What are some disruptions and changes that they see happening in the world of project management? If you are a Bangalore Chapter member, your heart will swell with pride at some of the answers. Promise! If you are not, you may find a couple of reasons to quickly sign up!
TEJAS SURA has over 20 years of experience in the construction infrastructure industry in India and USA. He has managed and directed multiple programs and projects simultaneously to ensure continuous service consistent with established standards and client satisfaction.
